Guide to Accessible Days Out in Dublin - The Hugh Lane Gallery

The Hugh Lane Dublin City Gallery is one of Dublin’s most decorative and impressive galleries, offering a fully immersive experience full of creativity and beauty to all its visitors.

However, alongside the building’s notable beauty, rich history and priceless fillings, the Hugh Lane Gallery also offers a large amount of accessible additives meaning all are welcome to explore the galleries ornate exhibitions.

Throughout the gallery there are wheelchair ramps and lifts. As well as this there are two wheelchairs available at request at the gallery’s reception.

Available on the gallery’s website are a series of audio descriptions to help those with visual impairments conjure detailed images of the gallery’s interior.

Although there are no audio descriptions of the individual paintings themselves, the online audio offers detailed descriptions of the architecture and sculpture halls in galleries 1 to 5, and most impressively an audio description of the Francis Bacon studio, an undoubtedly impressive display with its vast landscape full of coloured clutter.

The gallery has recently run a pilot programme offering audio descriptions of artworks in the collection for people with a visual impairment. This programme consists of using audio descriptions, high contrast images and sounds to help attendees to understand and explore images.
