Connecting Artists

Artists Biography, Artists Statement, and Artist Image

For the Connecting Artists programme, one of the things we do is support you to write an artist biography and statement and to share a picture of you with us. Connections Arts Centre will make an artist page for you on our website.

See an example here of an artist webpage here:  Niamh Eldridge Barry — ConnectionsArtsCentre

We will also use some of what you share on social media, like your inspirations or thoughts on being an artist.

Artist Biography:

What is an Artist Biography for?

An Artist Biography tells people about you as an artist. It gives information about you and your work. This helps people understand you and your art better. Should be written in the third person eg. “He”, “She”, “They”.

Below are some questions for your artist biography. This is just a guideline. Remember people are curious about who you are, what inspired your work, and how an artist works.

What should I include in my Artist Biography?

  • Your name

  • Where are you from?

  • Where do you live now?

  • Do you study art? If so, where? Or are you self-taught?

  • What inspires your artwork?

  • What mediums, materials, or techniques do you use?

  • What are you trying to say through your work

  • What is your style of work

  • Are you a member of any art groups or organisation’s?

  • How did it feel about being in this programme?

  • How do you feel about exhibiting your work at the Royal College of Surgeons

  • Is there anything else you wish to add?

Artist Statement:

What is an Artist Statement?

An Artist Statement explains the ideas behind your artwork. It gives people a better understanding of what your work is about. You can use it to describe the themes in your art, the story behind it, or why a subject is important to you.

What should I include in my Artist Statement?

Think about these questions:

  • How? How do you create your artwork? What materials, colors, or techniques do you use?

  • What? What is your artwork about? What subjects or ideas do you like?

  • Why? Why do you make this kind of art? What is the main message or feeling you want to share?

  • Keep your statement short and clear.

  • Should be written in 1st person; “I”, “Our”, “My”

  • Be specific and to the point.

  • Be confident.

  • Write about WHY you chose to create the artwork you create

Image of the Artist

It is a good idea to use an image of yourself to support your artist biography and statement. Each artist in the programme will get their own webpage on our website displaying their bio and image. See an example here of an artist:

To support your bio, you can take a picture of yourself using a phone. A family member, friend or support worker can help you with this. The image should be of your head and shoulders and should be clear. Try to take the picture in a bright place, during the day.
